Turkey Sack Vincenzo Montella After Four Consecutive Nations League Defeats

Turkey have parted ways with head coach Vincenzo Montella following a disappointing run of four consecutive defeats in the UEFA Nations League. The Turkish Football Federation confirmed the decision after the national team struggled against Belgium, France and Italy. Montella, who took charge in September 2023, leaves his position after a tenure that brought both notable achievements and frustrating setbacks.

Turkey’s recent results proved decisive in the Italian coach’s departure. The team suffered a 3-0 defeat away to Belgium, followed by a narrow 1-0 loss against France at home. Their struggles continued against Italy, who defeated Turkey twice, including a convincing 4-1 victory in Bursa on September 28. The results left the national side without a win in its four opening group matches.

Despite the disappointing conclusion to his tenure, Montella had previously helped Turkey qualify for Euro 2024 and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the European Championship, Turkey reached the round of 16 before losing 2-1 to Austria. However, their subsequent World Cup campaign ended in the group stage, adding to the pressure surrounding the coach’s future. The latest losing streak ultimately proved too damaging for him to retain his position.

Montella also faced significant challenges during the September and October international break, with several key players unavailable. Captain Hakan Calhanoglu, Juventus midfielder Kenan Yildiz and Real Madrid playmaker Arda Guler were among the notable absentees. Their absence weakened Turkey’s options, although the federation ultimately decided that the circumstances did not justify extending Montella’s tenure amid the team’s poor results.

Italy delivered another painful blow to Turkey with their 4-1 victory, scoring through Alessandro Bastoni, Davide Frattesi, Michael Kayode and Pio Esposito. The Italian national team later drew 1-1 with France on October 2, highlighting the contrasting fortunes of the two sides during the international window. Montella’s dismissal now leaves Turkey facing an important period of transition as the federation considers its next appointment and seeks to restore confidence, improve performances and rebuild the team’s competitiveness in international football.
